Phase 01 · Analysis

Nigredo

The blackening. The raw matter breaks down, because only what has been taken apart can be rebuilt better.

In alchemy

Nigredo, the blackening. On the alchemists’ plates it is the first operation of the Great Work: the raw matter is placed in the fire and left to decompose. It is the phase of the raven, of Saturn, of lead, of winter. Nothing precious is born without passing through here, because putrefaction is not a failure: it is how matter stops being what it was, so that it can become something else. Jung read it as the confrontation with the shadow, looking squarely at what one would rather not see.

In our work

Before designing or building, we take things apart. Every request arrives with a shape already decided, “we need an app”, “let’s redo the website”, and behind that shape there is a real problem, almost always a different one. In Nigredo we put the request in the fire: what really has to change, for whom, measured how. What already exists and can be kept. What can be left out without anyone noticing.

What we actually do

We talk to the people who use and the people who pay, not only to those who commission. We read the systems that are there: data, code, documents, habits. We write down the uncomfortable questions and we ask them. At the end of the phase you know what we are building, what we are not, and what it costs to find out, before a single euro goes into development.

Why it matters

It is the phase almost everyone skips, because it seems to produce nothing. It produces the most precious thing of all: the perimeter. A project without Nigredo reveals itself after three months, when the software works but is not needed, or when the second half of the budget goes into redoing the first. Taking apart costs days. Rebuilding costs months.

Then

Once the problem is bare, we move to Albedo: giving shape and clarity to what we have understood.
